    Hi Blue Hills,

This is Chaoyi Dong, I am student from Umass Boston Chinese Association Club. We decide to hike at Chickatawbut on this following Saturday (Apr 16th). So i have some question, what if raining this Saturday, can we still go hiking at this lane? And this is our first time go there, so do we need a tour guide? And how much is it? Thank you.

I am a Social Worker in the area and I have some young clients who I am thinking of bringing here to march the trail alone for some of our sessions this month of October. I have never been there myself but I was wondering if I would need to have a tour guide or would I be fine wondering about? Is there a cost?

    • Hi, So glad you’ll be visiting the Blue Hills! No need to have a tour guide – and the trails are free! I recommend that you get a trail map and bring a compass. (The numbers on the map correspond to the numbers on the trees, but it’s helpful to know which way you’re facing when you’re looking at the map!) You can pick them up for $3 at the Trailside Museum or the headquarters building.

You can view some suggested hikes here:

If you want an easy mile route, I’d suggest walking around Houghton’s Pond. Another easy, flat route is around Ponkapoag Pond: that’s closer to 4 miles. If you’ll be talking at the same time, you might want the flatter trails.

Hope that helps! Feel free to call or email with other questions!
