Trails Program
In the Fall of 2006, the Friends of the Blue Hills initiated the Trails Maintenance Program to address the work needed on the 125+ miles of trails in the Blue Hills Reservation. For volunteers who want to work under the supervision of a trail leader, we conduct maintenance events twice a month from May through October. For those who would prefer to work on a specific section of trail on their own schedule, we offer the Adopt-A-Trail program.
Take the next step to get involved and help preserve the Blue Hills Reservation!
Adopt-A-Trail Program
The Blue Hills Adopt-A-Trail program depends on dedicated volunteers to regularly maintain trails and report trail needs. Without regular volunteer support, many of the 125+ miles of trails in the Blue Hills Reservation will deteriorate and become unusable. To help ensure the Blue Hills Reservation continues to provide some of the best outdoor experience so close to metropolitan Boston, you can adopt your own trail and help give something back to the Reservation.
Taking on the stewardship of a trail is a privilege, and it is important that the adopter take the responsibilities of maintaining the trail seriously. That is why we provide the lists below. Yet, as the adopter of the trail, you will be responsible for the quality of the work performed, as well as for the safety of your group. But remember, you don't have to go it alone. We highly recommend that you involve your family, friends, and other groups in your trail work. Remember, too, that if a major problem arises, it is essential that you contact your Section Leader.
Adopter Responsibilities
  • Submit an Adopt-a-Trail Application Form.
  • Sign and submit the Adopter Agreement, which will be sent to you upon acceptance into the program. (Minimum one-year commitment.)
  • Attend a one-day, trails maintenance training course. Training courses are offered periodically through a number of organizations. We will provide information about upcoming trainings.
  • Attend two Friends of the Blue Hills or Appalachian Mountain Club group trail maintenance events. Check the list of event dates above.
  • You will be responsible for the following:
  1. Cleaning out existing drainage structures (waterbars, ditches, and dips).
  2. Cutting brush.
  3. Picking up litter
  4. Reporting obstructions (trees blocking paths - "blowdowns")
  • Perform these necessary tasks a minimum of three times a year, depending upon the needs of the trail.
  • Submit a written work report to your Section Leader after each work visit to your trail.
  • Work closely with your Section Leader and maintain open lines of communication.
  • Adhere to standards set forth in the Adopter Handbook.
  • Perform all work to protect the environment, natural resources, and the recreational experience of trail users.
  • Act in the spirit of partnership and as an FBH ambassador to the hiking public.
Adopter Tips
To keep your trail in the best possible condition for hiker use and trail longevity, we request that you do the following:
  • Make an initial trip in late spring to clean all drainages.
  • Clear any overgrown brush of trail before the heavy hiking season begins.
  • Make sure drainages are always clean, so as to prevent erosion and maintain the health of your trail.
  • Communicate any need for help to your Section Leader or FBH staff.
