2020-11-20James BriandSawcut Notch Path3This is a catch up report on an effort in November. Ruth and I sawed a tree that had fallen and blocked the trail between 4180 and 4133. We removed the tree pieces and put them into the brush away from the trail. Beyond the tree we clipped the occasional encroaching bush and picked up trash.Ruth Bigio
2021-01-11James BriandSawcut Notch Path1I did a winter check in on the trail with the aim of removing any immediate hazards, doing clean up and identifying large projects for follow up in the spring. section 1: 4214 to 4180 I removed a series of mid-sized branches that had fallen in the trail and were partially obstructing the way. I removed them beyond the trail and into the woods. I also collected a series of trash items concentrated primarily near the beginning of the trail including dog waste, beer cans and stray wrappers. 4133. Just off the Sawcut Notch trail on the adjacent Short Path was a major obstruction (I will submit a photo in a separate e mail). I propose to deal with this with a team in the spring. I believe it is within range to be dealt with using hand tools. I will gather the team from groups I have previously worked with on Fall 2018 clean up efforts on other adopted trails. The obstruction caused by the fallen tree noted above needs to be removed. I will arrange for a group to work on it in the spring.while hiking from one of my adopted trails (Sawcut Notch) to the other (Wampatuck Trail) just beyond 4142 going toward 4145 on Crags Foot Path. This has probably been reported but I wanted to note it in case it was not. It is a major tree fall that will probably require a chain saw effort. It is blocking the path thoroughly, causing hikers to create an alternative trail around it, thus widening path. I will send a photo along.

2021-04-04Robert HirsemanSkyline Trail3Walked trail and took notes of work needed. Was also checking if blazes had been vandalized, but thankfully not in my section.Noel PalatasMost grade reversals need a good cleaning and the trail could use some brushing too. I was not able to get out to the trail all last year so there is a bit of deferred maintenance. But I'll work on that bit by bit through the Spring.A couple of large trees are down. First is just a couple hundred yards from the Shea Rink parking lot. Second is near 4155, at the base of Rattlesnake Hill. Another is on the other side of the hill, in the saddle between the two peaks.
2021-03-13Bob FlaggSawcut Notch Path5Cleaan brook along trail near Randolph Ave trailhead, cleaned three grade reversals between 4042 and 4066, removed tree trunk blocking flow near large culvert past 4042.The stone surround on the large culvert is falling away and needs attention to repair/replace.

2021-05-26Paul BrookesMinichiello Path (FBH)0.25Walked path to review what work needs to be done on this trail. Some encroaching foliage needs to be cut back. Wooden bridge crossing the brook on the Green dot patch between 4234 and 4205 missing two cross planks. Skip Maysles, Pete Tierney and I are working on a weekday when we can come out, cut back encroaching foliage and replace planks on bridge (photo available)
2021-05-26Paul BrookesFirepit Path0.15Walked trail to see what work needs to be done in preparation for a possible weekday work trip with Pete Tierney, Skip Maysles and myself. Took photos.Tree has fallen across the firepit trail 50 yards after the intersection with the Skyline trail. The tree has broken two planks on the board walk which crosses the area that tends to flood in heavy rain. Skip Maysley, Pete Tierney and myself are working on finding a weekday where we can work on this.
2021-05-26Paul BrookesMurphy Path0.15Walked trail to see what work needs to be done. Took photos of Tree down across trail.A very large tree has fallen across the trail on the Murphy path between 4220 and the intersection with the ski jump trail. This is too large to step over and hikers have avoided the obstacle by created a 20 foot diversion path around the base of the tree before returning back to Murphy trail. The diameter of the tree where it has fallen across the path is about 3 feet (I would imagine to would need a chainsaw to cut it into sections).
2021-05-26Paul BrookesShort Path0.15Walked trail.A small tree has fallen across the trail 1 ft diameter. It needs to be sawed through in two either side of the trail and the section removed from trail. I plan to return with a hand saw and deal with this.
2021-05-26Paul BrookesGas Pipeline0.15Walked trail for any trail work required; this trail is fine, nothing needs to be done.
2021-05-26Paul BrookesQuarry Trail0.15Walked my adopted section of the Quarry trail, from nr 4220 to Wampatuck Rd. Trail is in good shape, no work needs to be done.
2021-05-25Paul BrookesSki Jump Path (FBH)0.15Climbed up and over the Ski Jump Path from 4205 to the Murphy Trail. The trail is in good condition, and also encouragingly no beer cans or trash (benefit of COVID?). No work needs to be done on this trail.
2021-06-03Paul BrookesMinichiello Path (FBH)1Replaced three broken boards on the bridge across the Brook at the southern tip of the St. Moritz ponds.Pete Tierney, Skip Maysles
2021-06-03Paul BrookesWinter Carnival Path (FBH)0.5Lopped overhanging branches and foliage that was encroaching onto the path.

2021-10-02Bob FlaggSawcut Notch Path3Cleaned lots of green briar from trail from Rt 28 to 4083. Widen path by clearing bushes growing across trail just past 4042.The trail crosses a brook about 100 yards past 4042 and the surrounding rock has collapsed into the brook partially blocking flow. Water now crosses trail further down the trail. Also need to do lots of maintenance from west of Short Path back east toward Old Furnace Brook at 4180.
2021-10-20Jim BriandSawcut Notch Path1I surveyed the trail for overall condition. I removed trash and dog waste from near the trail head. I removed loose obstacles from the trail (broken branches primarily) and I cut back some overhanging brush.I reported a fallen tree last year at 4180. FYI, that tree is still there blocking short path adjacent to Sawcut Notch. It is a big tree and a job for DCR.
2021-11-11Bob QuinnCrags Foot Path2cleared downed tree as much as possible at intersection #4142additional work requires a chain saw. intersection is blocked by large limbs, requiring diversions off trail.
