2022-01-25Jim BriandSawcut Notch Path2I did a mid-winter check in on the trail. Work consisted of walking Sawcut Notch Trail and Wampatuck Trails and trails in between. I picked up trash and noted a number of locations for clearing work in the spring. I identified three locations at roughly one third, one half and all the way to Short Path where fallen tree obstructions had been partially removed from trail either by dragging or sawing, but where the trail remained partially blocked. I will organize a group in the spring to remove these obstacles. A large obstruction remains at 4180 just off Saw Cut Notch that has been reported in the past. It will require a DCR chain saw crew. Wampatuck Path is in good shape. The work done in the fall has remained in place and drainage ditches are clear, and there are no major obstructions.Several areas on Saw Cut Notch where partially removed obstructions can be fully cleared. There is trash removal work to be done near 4124.No other issues.
2022-04-02Bob FlaggSawcut Notch Path1Walked the trail from Wampatuck Road, kicked branches off the trail and picked up small amount of trash. The trail needs heavy maintenance in the area from the Notch east about 100 yards past Short Path. The side ditch needs good cleaning and removal of much overgrowth blocking the drainage. Water also flowing onto trail. Hope to complete work for the upcoming May event.
2022-04-02Bob FlaggOld Furnace Brook Path0.5Walked trail to review drainage issues. There are two culverts that have had breaks and there is some open sections that need to be covered. In this area, there is a huge wet spot that needs two ditches cut perpendicular to the trail to allow water to flow across trail and drain puddles. Could be good project for group of ten volunteers for an event. Other wet spots on trail. Medium sized tree across trail about 30 yards from 4145.
2022-04-07Bob QuinnPine Tree Brook Path1cleared inflow and outflow of culvert just west of intersection # 4084; cleared leaves , branches etc. from drainage area west of trail just east of intersection # 4084. hope is to allow better drainage in area so as to dry out wet area on trailvery wet area of trail just west of intersection # 4084 needs more work to improve passage; possibly a swale or stepping stones would make trail safe for passage
2022-03-25Jessica BaumgartCCC Trail3Ruth and I cleared a lot of smylax (aka greenbriar) and other brambles from the CCC Camp site near the new interpretive sign, focusing on swaths encroaching on the foundation.Ruth BigioA lot of very big trees (like 3-4 feet in diameter) are across the trails between where we parked on Ridgewood Road and trail marker 4042. One is near 4010. Another is near the new interpretive CCC sign. These trees might be more along the lines of what the DCR should handle and the FBH tree crew should not. I'm not sure. Lots of bramble (barberry, rose, smylax, ...) removal and brushing is needed in this general area. This site is basically like a gift that keeps on giving. People should plan to deal with a lot of thorns. Some areas, like along the trails, are not so overgrown that recovery is impossible.
2022-05-06Ruth BigioCCC Trail17.5We concentrated on removing the invasive Garlic Mustard, from marker #4010 to marker #4023 (CCC camp), the entire trail is now in excellent shape (until next year!). We also carried two weed wrenches with us and removed some Multiflora and Japanese Barberry small shrubs. We worked 2.5 hours.Marnie Bolstad, Anna Macdougall, Piano Pena, Charlie Crosby, Thomas DeFilippo, LaurenGarlic Mustard is pretty much contained for the season. Other invasives (Mulitflora and Japanese Barberry) will need to be removed regularly.Poison ivy is just starting to grow in the area.
2022-05-06Shubha V ChungiPine Tree Brook Path21. Walked the entire to assess for near future work 2. Cleared the entrance of the trail from reservoir side 3. Widened the trail by clearing the overgrowthDivya ChungiAdditional clearing needed towards the reservoir side Trash collection (was way too much, needed bigger Trash bag) Need to rearrange rocks for crossing the wet area on the trail
2022-05-11Charlie CrosbyCCC Trail14Removed 7 bags of invasive Garlic Mustard and some Multiflora Rose. Oh, and one hockey skate!Sturdy Waterman, Manuel Veloso, Rita McCarthy, Mikal Rosendahl, Jennifer Brodbeck, Marina OkolaTons of multiflora rose and Japanese barberry to remove.
2022-05-17Jennifer BrodbeckSawcut Notch Path4Picked up 43 dog poops.Paul NorrisNear trail marker 4180 there is a drain that has collapsed in leaving a hole in the ground. Drain has dirt and debris inside of it now rendering it ineffective if in fact it had been used at all. Ditches on side of trail are filled with leaves leaving me to believe that it hasn’t been redirecting flow of water away from trail. Collapsed drain has potential to cause injury to a hiker not paying attention in spring, summer and fall but could be quite problematic during winter months with snow cover and has potential to injure animals/wildlife as well.
2022-05-21Bob FlaggSawcut Notch Path31.5Installed grade reversal at the start of the notch and cleaned out the long side ditch that runs past Short Path. Lots of overgrowth removed overhanging the side ditch.Ruth Bigio, Charlie Crosby, Natalie Moran, Grace Whouley, Emille Bent, Anna MacDougall, Mark Buckle, Joe Greeley

2022-06-14Bob QuinnFurnace Brook Trail0.5Cleared fallen tree from across trail just north of intersection #4120Old rusted corrugated metal culvert is still off trail at this site. This debris should have been removed when the new culvert was installed. It should be removed. If not, it should become an art project.
2022-06-14Bob QuinnPine Tree Brook Path0.25Brought two cobble stones (discarded there) down trail to brook crossing. They can be used to enhance swale / stepping stones in this areaswale / crossing should be constructed so as to improve water flow and enhance trail crossing.

2022-07-16Bob FlaggOld Furnace Brook Path36Recreated swale across trail at very wet area about 150 feet from Sawcutt Notch Path @ 4180. Fill in collapsed culvert that was a hazard to trail users.Charlie Crosby, Maxim Leonov, Russell Parkman, Shannon Fadden, Michael Pratt, Julia Milot, Grace Whooley, Jared Robe, Joe Nelson, Michael Albert, Ethan TherienThere are two remaining culverts at the intersection with Sawcutt Notch and further down trail past work site. The first one is not really critical and should just be filled in as it collapses. The other one might need to be dug out and replaced with a swale. No wildlife was observed during the work event.
