2021-01-06Chris MullinAccord Path0.5Helped to reduce standing water near junction with Coon Hollow, by removing fallen limbs and organic berm to allow water to flow over trail
2021-01-12John O'NeillSkyline Trail North2lopped pine branches from Headquarters (1186) to base of climb to tower (1063)Remove encroaching small pine trees, most if not all drainage areas need maintenance, log bridge near 1063 needs replacement. There are numerous areas along the trail where hikers (and bikers) are creating alternate pathways to avoid steep/wet/rocky/icy trail conditions.
2021-01-16Bob FlaggSkyline Trail South1.5Removed debris from the brook that runs along the trail near the intersection with the Wildcat Notch Path. Cleared smal trees and bushes to improve flow.Continue to clean the debris further down the hill in the brook. Also need to look at replacement of the boardwalk that is in the areas as it is rotting and slippery when wet. Should also extend as a bridge across the brook.
2021-01-18Mimi KuglerHoughton Trail2Inspected the entire trail. Raked out all the drainage structures. Raked leaves off the trail in some areas.Removed litter. There are too many colorful plastic bags full of dog droppings. In the spring, clean drainage structures again, and rebuild as needed. Brushing.
2021-01-18Mimi KuglerHoughton Hill Path1.5Inspected the entire trail. Raked out all the drainage structures.Raked leaves off the trail in some areas. In the spring, rake out drainage structures again and rebuild as needed. Limited brushing. There is a step over blowdown about 7 inched in diameter, on the west side of the loop in the trail.
2021-01-18Mimi KuglerBreakneck Ledge Path2.5Inspected the entire trail. Raked out all the drainage structures.Raked leaves off the trail in some areas.Removed litter. There are too many colorful plastic bags full of dog droppings. In the spring, rake out all the drainage structures again, and rebuild as necessary.
2021-01-09James GreenCoon Hollow Path6Brushing and water bar maintenance lower half of trail. Initiated removal of large downed tree near trailhead. Require better equipment to finish work. Will return to complete required work.Daniel Green, James GreenDowned tree at trailhead requires better equipment. Will return to complete.Trail very busy with hikers and cyclists.
2021-01-23James GreenCoon Hollow Path7.5Removed large downed tree from trailhead.Daniel Green, James Green
2021-03-01Mike ProkoschHemenway Hill Path1Cleared minor blowdowns. Cleared two water bars on either downslope from the Jeffries Trail intersection, tree 1154. Both seem to have been filled in deliberately, one with brush, one with stone. Was that our doing?Between 1140 and 1154 a pine snapped off. It's leaning over the trail, supported by a live 4"-6" dia. hardwood. Feels solid now but you could call it a safety hazard. I could take it out with a bow saw; chain saw quicker (I don't have chain saw certification and won't take action in any case without a go-ahead). Also between 1140 and 1154, I'd propose a new water bar above a slowly eroding section. There's a spring / groundwater just below an existing water bar, so that isn't stopping erosion. I'm happy to build it with whatever supervision.
2021-02-28Dan SlavinSkyline Trail South1Cleared a heavy fallen tree from South Skyline near the Wildcat junction. Other light trail maintenance and branch/tree clearing along the trail.Bob Flagg
2021-03-03Mike ProkoschHoughton Path2removed minor blowdowns. No hazards.Becky Pierce
2021-03-26Steve MurphyBrookwood Trail1.25Inspected the entirety of the Brookwood Trail. Raked out 3 water runoff bars. Cleared one small pine tree that was canopied over the trail and about to blow down. No other obstructions on the trail. No trash on the trail!
2021-03-21Anna MacDougallHalf Way Path1.3Trail was pretty clean. Just had to remove a few small branches off the trailDid not see or hear any wildlife.
2021-03-31Dexter RobinsonSkyline Trail West4Spring cleanup - removed debris: sand, leaves, branches from the trail. Cleaned out water bars. Picked up trash.Jim PickelNeed to cover the trail section along the Eliot Circle trail to Eliot TowerBlazes in this section appear untampered with unlike what has happened on the north and south Skyline trails.
2021-04-14Dexter RobinsonSkyline Trail West0.5Completed checking my section from 1030 to Eliot Tower. Picked up and disposed of trash.Re-blazing the entire adopted section
2021-04-15Judy JacobsWolcott Path9Raked side ditches from Headquarters for about a 1/4 mile.Jennie Li, Randy Wambold, Caissie TetuThe ditch continues on Walcott.Volunteers were from Definitive Healthcare.
2021-04-10Kenny VoshellSkyline Trail South3Cleaned all grade reversals of debris. Picked up trash along trail. Used loppers to clear branches overhanging on trail. Work done on full length of south skyline.
2021-04-22Judy JacobsWolcott Path10Raked marker 1160.Paul Duffey, Jeeva Sivaprakasam, Amanda Reid, Narenda PrasadThere's more raking on Walcott.
2021-04-23Dexter RobinsonSkyline Trail West4Re-blazed entire adopted section both directions. Removed fallen dead tree near Rt. 138Some cleanup on stone stairs from recent storms
2021-04-24Bob FlaggBorder Path16.5Cleaned culvert at Unquity Rd trailhead to remove small trees growing in ditch and other debris; remove debris from side ditch between 1175 and 1165 cutoff; clean three grade reversals west of 1165.1Amanda Ford, Greg Ford, Thomas Richard, Matthew Richard
2021-04-24Joe WoodmanEustis Trail16.5Removed downed trees and branches from 3 outflow ditches west of 1166; cleaned two more grade reversals east of 1166.Bill Card, Jon Morse, Ian McLachlan, Mary BlanchetteTwo grade reversals closest to Chestnut Run Path end near good cleaning.
2021-04-24Pete TierneyWolcott Path9Trash clean-up in and around the parking lots near the Trailside Museum on Route 138. Filled 10 trash bags and added large pieces of debris to pile for DCR pick-up.Steve, Nadia, BevStill more trash in area
2021-04-24Mimi KuglerBreakneck Ledge Path3.5Raked out all drainage structures, reshaped grade reversals and rolling dip. Picked up one piece of trash, a discarded or lost mask.More of the same, at least twice a year.
2021-04-27Dexter RobinsonSkyline Trail North5From 1141 to 1063 removed excessive illegal dark blue paint from trees and rocks. Legal light blue blazes covered without overlap with dark blue paint left alone since this trail will be re-blazed soon with the correct light blue boundary paint. Did this work for travelling in both directions on this trail section.Steve TedeschiThe other section of the north skyline from 1141-1186 needs to be reviewed. This trail section is over blazed in places plus many trees have blazes for both directions on the same tree. It is best to have only one blaze on a tree. Otherwise if the tree dies or goes down you lose 2 blazes.
2021-04-27Judy JacobsWolcott Path16We raked to the trail that comes out left after 1160.Margaret Byrne, Daniel Pasquale, Audrey Iodice, Will Henderson, Christian Griffith, Zach Ronnow, Scott SalvucciStill lots of raking.
2021-05-01Judy Lehrer JacobsWolcott Path18Raking up to about 1147.Dominique Thomas, Taliah Gabriel, Isabelle Feloney, Sam Lawrence, Emma Weeber, Wendy Kelly, Leonice Bernard, Samantha PincusAdditional raking on Walcott.
2021-05-05Eric HansenHancock Trail1.5Weather/conditions • Fog, intermittent light rain. 47 deg F, 98% humidity, wind 3 mph NW. Had been raining on/off for the past 24 hours so the trails were wet. Approx time spent: 1.5 hours Work done:• Picked up trash, seen mostly near the trailhead and summit area. • Brushed in a worn herd path that ran adjacent to Hancock Trail (NE), the length between Chestnut Run Path and Pipsissewa Path.• Brushed in a herd path running SE from Pipsissewa Path and intersecting higher up on Hancock Path. This likely developed due to a poorly placed blue blaze on a tree at a bend along the trail. I also placed logs/branches parallel to the proper trail to attempt to dissuade people from using the herd path.• Brushed in a perpendicular herd path running NW from Hancock Trail. • Where Hancock Tr intersects Hancock Hill Path, as one ascends there is a herd path almost directly across which later rejoins Hancock Tr in the ledgy spots. I brushed in the beginning of this path to reduce confusion and dissuade continued use. It may be helpful to place some sort of sign or arrow here to make it clear that the Hancock Tr proper continues further south along Hancock Hill Path.To do’s: • Re-blaze, especially in rocky/ledgy areas between summit and Hancock Hill Path intersection.• Consider signage/arrow indicating where Hancock Tr runs overlapping Hancock Hill Path, then diverges again. This would dissuade use of the herd path in that area. • There is no intersection marker at Hancock Tr / Hancock Hill Path (south) intersection - one should be added here.Saw an otter scampering across the street (close to Houghton Pond) as I was driving in.
2021-05-05Eric HansenCircle Trail1Weather/conditions • Fog, intermittent light rain. 47 deg F, 98% humidity, wind 3 mph NW. Had been raining on/off for the past 24 hours so the trails were wet. Approx time spent: 1.0 hour Work done: • Picked up trash, seen mostly near the Hancock Hill summit area. • Cleared stream of leaves/sticks to improve flow and reduce seepage onto trail. • Cleared rock waterbar, adding some new rocks and building up the berm with dirt, tamping it down. Although it was raining (and had rained recently) there was no water flow observed in or above this spot. • Partially cleared outflow ditch of leaves and debris, observing the “medium size tree laying in ditch” that was noted in Dec 2015 report by Bob Flagg. The log can probably be pulled out of the ditch and off trail using straps and two or more people. That said, it did not appear to be significantly impeding flow at this time. • Noted several minor herd paths leaving Circle Tr heading running west towards the top of the “ridge”.To do’s: • Remove medium size tree laying in ditch.
2021-05-05Eric HansenHancock Hill Path1picked up trash, seen mostly seen near the intersection with Skyline Tr. Raked/cleared trail of leaves/sticks on the east side of summit where there was standing water. This area does not drain very well and was wet/muddy in spots, with trail widening taking place due to people walking to the sides of the puddles. I noted a new/recent blowdown approx 0.1 miles north of Skyline intersection. It’s easily stepped over, but also fairly large and would require a crosscut saw, axe or chainsaw to remove. Brushed in a notable herd path that led west towards Hancock summit. To do’s: Clear the new blowdown, 0.1 miles north of Skyline intersection. Revisit and continue any maintenance that I didn’t have time for. This is specifically along the last section (NE corner) after intersection with Hancock Tr (this is the semi-loop that crosses Breakneck Ledge Path and Chestnut Run Path.)
2021-05-08Kenny VoshellSkyline Trail South3Entirety of south skyline: cleared all drainage grade reversals, trimmed overhanging branches, picked up trash, laid sticks to direct traffic on trail near hillside rd.1 large tree down near wildcat notch. Relatively easy to step over, but may want to have DCR cut it.
2021-05-08John O'NeillSkyline Trail North3Cleaned out/rebuilt 2 water bars/culverts, and created 1 water diversion channel between 1186 and 1172. Moved some downed limbs into a newly created treadway that has formed next to stairs at 1186. Added 2 drainage channels to help with ponding issue between 1141 and 1150. This ponding issue has resulted in a new treadway.Water bars and other drainage areas between 1141 and 1063 need to be addressed.Trees continue to fall due to erosion. The amount of trail pressure has resulted in newly created treadway between State Police and Eliot Tower, leading to erosion. Clear signage restricting bicycles needs to be added as there continues to be evidence of cycle use on this stretch of skyline.
2021-05-08Bob FlaggChickadee Path (FBH)1.5Cleaned all grade reversals on trail, moved large treetrunk from ditch near beginning of trail at 1085.
2021-05-08Bob FlaggPuddle Path1.25Cleaned all grade reversals and culvert on trail.
2021-05-25Eric HansenHancock Hill Path1Checked all the herd paths that I had previously brushed in, they’re still obscured with no new visible foot traffic. (Good news!) Additional dumplings of leaves will help seal the deal. Also scouted out for reblazing on ledge/rocky upper sections of trails near the summit.Re-blaze, especially in rocky/ledgy areas between summit and Hancock Hill Path intersection.
2021-05-25Eric HansenCircle Trail1Removed a fresh blowdown near the intersection of Circle and Skyline. Checked on section of trail close to running draining on west side; still a little muddy and moist, and I’m sure the soil is compacted. Trail is being widened there due to people wanting to avoid the mud. Could use a helping of crushed stone to keep people center of trail and reduce further damage. Removed the “medium size tree laying in ditch” that was noted in Dec 2015 report by Bob Flagg; cleaned out that drainage from leaves and debris.Continue to monitor muddy spot and consider adding some self-crushed stone.
2021-05-25Eric HansenHancock Hill Path1Picked up trash. Removed the large/heavy blowdown as previously noted approx 0.1 miles north of Skyline intersection. Removed a fresh blowdown at 42.2214, -71.0930 near the bottom of the trail as it loops around to Chestnut Run Path. I’m actually not sure if this is Hancock Hill Path, but either way it’s clear now.
2021-05-09John O'NeillSkyline Trail North2Filled downed brush into newly formed cut off trail at 1092. Cleaned out water bar on Coon Hollow just above junction at 1092. Attempted to create channels to allow water to flow through and out of the boggy area (log bridge) between 1092 and base of Wolcott hill.Numerous water bars need to be rebuilt/cleaned out or added.Log bridge mentioned above needs replacement, blazes need to be repainted. Newly formed trail short cuts should be filled in with brush. Proper signage for bicycle use should be placed at appropriate intersections.
2021-06-05Bob FlaggSummit Trail56Cleaned long side ditch running almost length of trail, cleaned and reshapped two grade reversals near Summit Rd, removed debris blocking culvert at the Green Dot Trail, cleared lots of debris from small brook that runs along edge of parking lot.Chris Spiegel, Daniel Slavin, Jodie Davis, Jim Del Monaco, Beverly Anderson, Steve Hern, Suzanne Furgal, Mimi Kugler, Tim Sidor, Ruth Bigio, Farley Sullivan, Joe Woodman, Bill Card, Erik Barrios, Mark BuckleThe brook needs further cleaning upstream toward Trailside Museum and downstream. Several large logs need removal - might need rope. Wait until late summer when the flow in brook is greatly reduced.National Trails Day!!
2021-06-08John O'NeillSkyline Trail North22re-blazed trail in both directionsregarding blaze work, there may be a few blazes that need to be added.
2021-06-06Anna MacDougallHalf Way Path1.5removed some small tree branches and had to take down one over the trail tree branchwill need to rake out the two reversesno wildlife sighted
2021-06-12Judy Lehrer JacobsWolcott Path20Raked side ditch from about 1160 to 1147. It would be great to install stairs in this dirt slope area. Also will repair the guardrail broken in the lot area.
2021-08-12Mihika SinghAccord Path3.5According to the map provided during training, and the on-site map, I worked from where it said "5321" to "5175". I went through a trail called "Acton Path", although that wasn't an option to select above so I just selected something else.

2021-10-29Ruth BigioCoon Hollow Path4Blowdown on Coon Hollow Path, near marker #1123. After this week's Nor'Easter, I encountered a sizable blowdown on Skyline Trail (Coon Hollow Path) yesterday. Skyline is heavily used.Marnie Bolstad, Nancy Dimock, William Manley, Kenneth Pariser, Rita My, Mikal Rosendahl, Elizabeth MeyerWe cleared the path, it looks clean. Some thicker branches could be cut back further but with only handsaws, it will take extra time and effort. With chainsaws it could be done quickly. But there are many blowdowns from the Nor'Easter and we should concentrate our efforts to quickly remove as many as possible.

2021-11-20Bob FlaggHoughton Path1.25Cleared two large tree crowns near 1147.The trail is passable for foot traffic but the remaining portion of one of the trees needs to be removed to allow motor vehicle traffic.
2021-11-20Mimi KuglerHoughton Trail1Inspected the entire trail. Three out of four drainage structures had recently been thoroughly cleared; thank you to whoever did that! The other one was cleared on this trip. Removal of fallen branches from the trail. Brushing. Leaf raking where they were thickest.More leaf raking on this steep trail. Cutting back the pesky greenbriars, again...

She started to hike in the Blue Hills and got lost up to Eliot Tower on the red dot trail. She decided the markings were not clear and offered to repaint them. Tom Bender suggested I help her (since I had repainted all red and green dot trails a couple of years ago).
2021-12-03Ruth BigioCoon Hollow Path0.5Repainted red dots on Coon Hollow Path from Eliot Tower (#1055) to #1082.This section is now part of the Abigail Adams trail, will continue to beginning of AA trail.
