Friends of the Blue Hills (FBH) is looking for a passionate and outgoing Community Engagement Specialist to lead fun, meaningful outdoor programs that connect people of all ages to nature this summer. Position Summary

Reporting to the Volunteer and Education Program Manager, the Community Engagement Specialist be a collaborative member of the FBH team of staff members and volunteers to support our long-term park management, habitat preservation, membership, and fundraising goals. This position supports FBH stewardship and engagement through guided hikes, stewardship work, and tabling events throughout the Blue Hills. You’ll plan, promote, and deliver seasonal outdoor programming focused on nature exploration, fitness, environmental learning, and trail care—bringing new audiences into the park and fostering a sense of connection and care for the land.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and lead public programs aligned with FBH’s mission—nature walks, fitness hikes, trail work, social events, meetups, and more
  • Plan, market, and manage seasonal programming for children, families, and outdoor enthusiasts
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, training, and special events
  • Coordinate logistics, registration, and safety protocols for all programs
  • Represent FBH at in-park events and engage visitors at public tabling stations
  • Contribute to marketing efforts and track participation data
  • Summarize and document planning details for future programming
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Enthusiastic about outdoor recreation, environmental education, and community engagement
  • Experience developing and leading nature-based programs (especially for families or youth)
  • Strong communication, leadership, multitasking, and customer service/visitor experience skills
  • Comfortable working independently and outdoors in all conditions
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in environmental spaces
  • CPR/First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to lift 40 lbs and hike up to 5 miles (while carrying tools)

Job Details

  • Type: Part-time, seasonal (June–September), approx. 10 hours/week including some weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • Rate: $18–$23/hour
  • Start Date: Ideally no later than June 30, 2025
  • Location: Blue Hills Reservation and FBH office in Canton
  • CORI/SORI check and vehicle use required; not benefits-eligible
