Youth Programming

Friends of the Blue Hills offers engaging outdoor education programs designed to connect students with nature while aligning with curriculum standards. Our programs will inspire curiosity and stewardship in the next generation through hands-on learning experiences in person in the outdoors.

FIRE AND THE ECOSYSTEM

Grades 4-12 | 2 hours | $10 per student

Join FBH to learn about the role fire plays in the Blue Hills and how youth can be lifelong stewards of the Blue Hills.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, this program is free for the first 10 public schools.

FOREST ECOLOGY & STEWARDSHIP

Grades 6-12 | 2 hours | FREE

Take part in trail stewardship, invasive species control, and on-going efforts to clean litter in our parks while learning about the value of habitats and green spaces. Your group will get their hands dirty with FBH while learning what goes into maintaining 125 miles of trails in greater Boston’s largest urban green space.

SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN THE OUTDOORS

Grades 6-12 | $10 per student

Students connect to nature through this hands-on / minds-on discovery hike to the highest peaks in the Blue Hills and explore how to use the power of nature to build physical fitness, regulate our emotions, build character and community, and grow leadership skills.

HABITATS, ECOSYSTEMS & BIODIVERSITY

Grades 3-8 | $10 per student

With hands-on outdoor activities, students will discover plants and animals that are essential in ecosystems. This program also covers biodiversity, climate change, and human impact.

GEOLOGY OF THE BLUE HILLS

Grades 3-8 | $10 per student

Review rock cycle and rock classification. Then hit the trails to learn about geologic forces that shape the Blue Hills, such as volcanoes, glaciers, and erosion. Students will do field tests on soils and explore the connection of rocks and soils.
