LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:Â MODERATE
This hike will be approximately 3 miles, with some elevated difficult terrain and rocky obstacles. Wear sturdy footwear.Â
This hike will begin at 840 Hillside St, Houghton’s Pond, by the playground.Â
Hikes are rain or shine. We stay together and take a steady but patient pace. We are patient with everyone and we will go the pace of the slowest hiker. Stops may be frequent for water, pictures or any other reason.
Appropriate gear includes hiking boots, microspikes, water and layers.
Stay together. Look out for each other. Report issues to hike leader immediately.
Sorry for the late notice but I will have to cancel for myself and friend.
Too icy for our old bones to risk.
Hoping for a repeat when the weather is warmer.
It is icy just about everywhere right now, but no fear! We will have more life after the fire hikes coming up this spring. Just keep an eye on the calendar.
I’ve been thinking of using iNaturalist to document the regrowth of plants in the burned area. Anyone else thinking along these lines? I say this knowing that the Blue Hills has a very minimal presence on iNat. Is anyone thinking about changing this?
We are actively working with DCR to put in place a research protocol to monitor the fire area for biodiversity and regrowth etc. We will be finding out more form DCR next week when we go out to the fire zone with them to see what tool they want to use to collect data, perhaps iNaturalist.
