Wondering where the money goes?
Because FBH is the only organization supporting DCR’s efforts to maintain the park’s habitats and trails, funds that are raised go toward management and execution of trail maintenance, invasive removal, and other protective efforts. Each year, FBH organizes, trains and manages more than 300 volunteers and 50 events to help take care of the forest.Â
But that’s not all.
FBH is also the primary steward of the park’s borders and is constantly monitoring activity in surrounding towns that may negatively impact the park (e.g., unchecked development, environmental hazards, etc). Occasionally, paid subject matter experts are needed for specific initiatives (e.g., the buffer study mentioned in the Spring 2024 newsletter that allowed FBH to identify the portions of the borders most at risk of adverse impact). FBH pushes out various communications to help ensure public awareness of these potential threats (e.g., encouraging due diligence before extending the Granite Links golf course lease).
And, of course, promoting the park to the general public is part of the mission, too. This comes down to offering free programming to make the park more inclusive and accessible to all.
With our new ED, Jen Klein, in place, we’re working on expanding our educational offerings a lot this year. So, any funds raised help with that effort tremendously.
